Welcome Letter, Vintage Dance Weekend participants Oct 10, 2007
Dear Vintage Waltzers,
The fall colors will be at their peak this weekend for you dancing at the Tivoli
Theater in a revitalized downtown Chattanooga.
Come early Friday and stay later on
Sunday, when we will dance more in the theater and then have the usual Dutch
dinner up at the Lookout Mountain Canyon Grill at 5 pm (this could change to a
riverfront restaurant in downtown Chattanooga, such as the Boathouse).
Although the house, studio and barn burned Aug. 3, you still can hike the
farm or Pigeon Mountain if legs need more exercise and stretching. Or just enjoy serious porching
on the hill top with a cup of tea and the autumn mountain views.
We have a great menu, TBA. I believe all of you have let our registrar know of your veggie and non-veggie
choices, which you will need to stick with unless you can negotiate something
with Chef xxxx. He will have his Chef's Soup Pot Friday night. This
is not part of the meal plan, and please drop some dollars in his table hat.
And expect a tasty treat late Saturday night after the ball is over.
Richard and Angela have created a rich and varied and unique weekend of
dancing and workshops that will explore more than two centuries of waltzing,
based on selections from his semester long waltz course at Stanford
University.
Saturday evening is
the popular and colorful Vintage Waltz Ball, which Richard will prompt and DJ,
and you can expect to see contemporary formal wear as well as elegant period
attire and or eclectic dress from any of the past two centuries of waltzing.
I'm sure all know formal dress is not required but most of us know how much fun
it is to escape from the 21st century for a few hours in our historic
"costumes." Usually it's the penguin look for men and the rainbow look for
women. See photos of period dress from Bob Chapman at the link below or
search for Cincinnati's Flying Cloud Academy web pages or vintage dance photos
in general. Digital photos are
posted to the web page so all your friends and family can share in the fun of your
night out at an imagined, mystical land of mostly 3/4 time
music.
We start at 7 pm Friday with waltzing warm-up music and an intro class if
needed, although all are expected to know some rotary waltz. Fun and
escape is what this vintage waltz weekend is about. Richard's class begins
at 8 p.m. Friday. But we will be pushed to absorb all of what Richard will
lead us into with his clear teaching style as he explores the changing world of
waltzing from its murky origins to 20th century variations. Several moves
have not been taught before but he says they can be used today on the dance
floor.
Video is welcome if for personal use with Richard's permission.
We have been sold out since earliy August but in early October were able to open
up registration after renting the entire Tivoli stage for the weekend.. For new
dancers, there are a few considerations: Must wear clean non-street,
non-marking, soft-sole shoes for dancing. No child care facilities. No pets or
alcohol allowed. Avoid strong perfumes. Smoking is discouraged and is not
allowed near any building. No open drink containers or food in studio. See
general admissions policy link on waltz web page link.
Looking forward to an exciting waltz weekend with you,
Sid Hetzler
